22 Sep #IndieSpotlight: Chicken and Frog Bookshop
Tell us about the Chicken and Frog Bookshop.
We are based in Brentwood, Essex, just off of a busy high street. Our main aim is to encourage a true love of reading for reading’s sake. We are a specialist children’s bookshop, with a tuition centre on-site and we find that the two halves of the business complement each other well.
We are here for our community and feel passionate that books and bookshops are for everyone. That’s why we host a full programme of events, both in-store and in schools, throughout the year, including author/illustrator workshops, regular storytimes, a children’s arts festival with the local theatre, two free grottos for Christmas, a monthly sensory storytime session, book clubs…lots!
Describe the shop in three words.
Welcoming, diverse, fun!
What do you love about working here?
Pairing a child with their perfect book. And giving families the opportunities to meet authors and illustrators – it’s a magical experience.
When it’s quieter, we get to read and call it ‘work’. It’s heavenly.
What are you excited about reading next?
I can’t wait for Vashti Hardy’s next book, Darkwhispers. The cover has just been revealed and it’s so beautiful.
Which upcoming events should we look forward to?
We have the brilliant A.F.Harrold with us on 5th October, to celebrate Bookshop Day and National Poetry Day.
Also, we are planning to work with new author, Reni K Amayo, to highlight The Daughters of Nri – details to come for that one.
We have very big plans for October half term, but I’m not allowed to spill the beans just yet…
