Now we are three
This is the story of how we grew from one tiny idea, one book club running at Wimbledon Park Primary back in 2008 to delivering book clubs to over 3,500 secondary and primary school pupils since inception. As people often tell us the idea is simple, but then the best ideas often are. The model is of an adult book club discussing, sharing ideas and talking about books in a fun way. We started with parent volunteers and these amazing people are still at work in our primaries. The idea really took off at secondary where we train older pupils to facilitate book clubs for the younger children, giving both groups a unique experience, the older ones gain life skills that are transferable to work and the younger ones a book club, a stop in the week that is their time to discuss and share ideas.
We get to read books, meet authors and talk about how books can provide empathy and change people’s ideas. We have been helped along the way by various teachers, friends, and charities in particular Give a Book and BeyondMe. And with the funding from the Ipsos Mori Foundation we will be working in 25 schools by January 2018, just watch this space…
